Designing Resiliency in Urban Landscape

Critic: Anne Tate, Nadine Gerdts

Deriving from the Greek word sitos (food) and topos (place), Sitopia emphasizes the dynamic relationship between food and place, and this is where I aimed my focus, changing our relationship with food, and providing access to a healthier lifestyle in the area of Field’s Point in Providence, Rhode Island.

Food has the power to shape our cities. We rarely pause to think about how food reaches our tables, and how through them, it molds us. The fate of nations depends on the way they eat, said Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. The modern food networks we have are damaging the balance of human existence. They reveal the issues what we have yet to resolve - obesity, destruction of the environment, food deserts, and more. We need to recognizing the central role that food plays in our lives and harness its potential to shape the world in a better way.
